Timeline: Before reaching Cerberus Headquarters
Main characters: Alais Shepard and Liara T'Soni
It was dark, pitch black, she couldn't even see her hand in front of her face, 'where am I?' she thought. Then as suddenly as the thought left her mind a white light appeared in the distance, with no place else to go she ran towards it while it became bigger and bigger until it engulfed her and then she saw... "Kaidan?!"
"It's the right choice and you know it Ash" he said, it was Virmire, Kaidan was holding back the geth defending the bomb that was supposed to blow up the whole facility "it was an honor working with you commander, I don't regret a thing..."
Shock and confusion took over Shepard's face "what? No, Kaidan!! I'm sorry..." she said painfully, trying to reach out to him, but then the explosion came and everything went white as she closed her eyes protecting them from the flash. When she opened them, a massive tall structure was standing before her, and everything was shaking, she was at the Shroud.
"Need to do this, my project, my work, my responsibility" Mordin said "has to be me, someone else might've gotten it wrong" he smiled at Shepard and got into the elevator
"No mordin you can't do this!!!!" but it was too late, he was going up already and in a few more moments shepard saw with horror how the structure burned and exploded...She fell to her knees, her hands on her head grasping her hair and tears of frustration rolling down from her closed eyes. Everything went black again.
She slowly went back to her feet and opened her eyes once more, now she was at the citadel and was watching Thane fight off Kai Leng "Not this time" she said and grabbed her gun and started shooting at Kai Leng, but the bullets went right through him without damaging him at all "what the?...." and in a sudden movement Kai Leng stabbed Thane in the abdomen "NO!! THANE!!!! YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!" she yelled at Kai Leng as she charged at him with no better result than the gun had offered.
She ran back to Thane "I'm sorry Shepard I could not stop him...." and just like that he was gone. She felt the despair building up inside her until she couldn't hold it any longer "AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH" she yelled in frustration, then again everything went pitch black and she could only hear Harbinger's voice in the darkness "We are the Harbinger of your perfection, you cannot stop us Shepard, face your annihilation, our power is unmatched, you exist because we allow it and you will end because we demand it" and then she saw her allies and friends all around her, Joker, Anderson, Hackett, Garrus, Tali, Wrex, Ashley, Jack, Miranda, Grunt, Samara, EDI, Jacob, James, and one by one she saw them dying, shot, burned, turned into husks, all of them screaming her name asking for help "no...no...NO!!!" she said shaking her head and staring at them helplessly. And then she saw Liara all covered in blood, part of her armor blown off "Shepard... help...." and she fell to the floor "NOOOOOO LIARAAAA!!!!!!!" she yelled as she ran to her. And that's when she woke up.
She suddenly opened her eyes, she felt cold drops of sweat rolling down her face and she was breathing fast. Then she noticed the face of her lover in front of her, with that lovely shade of blue she loved so much, and with a worried expression on her face she asked "Shepard, are you ok?" as her warm hand got her hair out of her sweaty face
"Yeah...just a bad dream" she answered trying to make it sound unimportant, she put her hand on Liara's cheek, gave her a quick kiss on the lips and she rolled around, her back to Liara, she didn't want to worry her more than needed, and the despair of losing her she experienced in the dream was still fresh and she was sure it was showing on her face.
She felt a warm hand on her arm that lowered until it reached hers and grabbed it, then she felt a kiss on the back of her neck "more like a nightmare" Liara said "talk to me Alais..." goddess she loved when she called her by her name, the fact that only she did it made it better. Who was she fooling, she knew she could not hide anything from this woman, besides not much sense trying to hide it, the cold sweat and the fast breathing probably gave her away already.
" She sighed "a nightmare indeed..." as she squeezed Liara's hand, and felt her warm body pressed onto her back, which actually calmed her a little, this wasn't a dream, this was real and Liara was right there with her "what did you see?" Liara asked, after a moment she anwered "death... of our perished friends, of our other allies and friends helping us now....and worst of all.... yours...."
Liara hugged her, putting her head on her shoulder "I'm not going anywhere my love...". She squeezed her hand again and rolled around facing her "no you're not, cause I'm not letting you" she said frowning "I'm not letting anyone else die"
Liara smiled "I know you want to save everyone, that's what I love about you, noone asked you to be a hero but you became one either way, even for me. You're always putting yourself in danger to save others" then her face wore a more worried expression "but this is a war Alais there will be casualties, more than the ones we've already seen, you can't save everyone, you can't defend everyone" then a tear started rolling from her eyes "you need to be more careful...please... because I don't think I can bear loosing you again..."
"hey hey..." Shepard said softly wiping the tear off Liara's eyes "I'm not going anywhere either, remember? I'm always coming back, no matter what, I'll come back to you and we'll always be together"
A smile took over Liara's lips "I'm sorry Alais" she said embarrassed "I was supposed to comfort you about your nightmare, and now it's you comforting me again"
"I don't mind" Shepard said smiling back
"We are gonna win this war" Liara said after a moment of silence "you might not be able to save everyone but you will kill the reapers and stop them from wiping us all out... all the races in the galaxy are united because of you, you achieved the impossible task of bringing them all together to fight for a common cause, and now we all follow you, we could not ask for a better leader"
Shepard smiled at her, staring at the depth of her beautiful blue eyes full of blind confidence in her. It might sound crazy, but that little speech coming from her gave her that final push she needed, and dissipated all her doubts. Liara trusted her blindly, and she couldn't betray that trust. She fought to save the galaxy of course but most of all she fought for her, for a chance to live on with her for the rest of her life, she fought for their future.
"Thank you" she said smiling "I love you Liara" she reached out putting her hand on the back of Liara's neck and pulling her close to kiss her lovingly
"I better go get ready" shepard said after regretfully breaking the kiss "we must be getting close to cerberus base" she got up and sat on the edge of the bed "yes, I should do the same" Liara kissed her on the shoulder and sat up too.
Shepard smiled at her one last time and got up feeling Liara's gaze on her every step of the way.
